history
The settlement of the area of Cambridge began in 1804. With Joseph Tyler, Noah Littlefield, Jacob Hatch and Mr. Kimball first settlers reached the area and settled, others followed. The first child was born in 1815 and from 1818 the first school lessons were held in a log cabin. A large fire, which is said to have been part of the Mirimachi fire , a large forest fire starting in New Brunswick , destroyed all houses in Cambridge except for the "Lane House" in 1825. A first store was opened in 1827.
On February 8, 1834, Cambridge was founded as an independent town north of the Sebasticook River and separated from the town of Ripley south of the Sebasticook River. Cambridge was named after Cambridge in England. The proposal went back to Isaac Hooper's eleven-year-old daughter, at whose house the split was decided at a meeting. She was asked to suggest a name and suggested Cambridge as she had just read something about the city.
The town was also damaged by a hurricane that swept over it in 1874. Several houses had to be demolished. As in the fire of 1825, no people were killed here either. In 1885, parts of Wellington were added.
