history

On February 29, 1840, parts of Mercer, Dearborn and the East Pond Plantation were organized into Smithfield Town. The area was part of the Plymouth Claim, the Kennebec Purchase. The town was named after a resident, Reverend Henry Smith. The main settlement is on the east bank of the North Pond. There was a grist mill in the town around 1880 and three mills for wood processing. Today there are several holiday camps for young people in the area.
