Athens is a town in Somerset County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 1,019 inhabitants in 577 households on an area of 112.95 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Athens has a total area of 112.95 km², of which 112.93 km² is land and 0.02 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Athens is in the south of Somerset County and borders on Piscataquis County . To the southeast, Great Moose Lake borders the area and its tributary, the Black Stream , forms part of the town's border. Ironbound Pond borders in the northwest . There are only smaller lakes in the area of the town. The surface is slightly hilly, the 284 m high Stickney Hill is the highest point.

history
After the survey, the area was named Township No. 2, Second Range North of Plymouth Claim, East of Kennebec River (T2 R2 NPC EKR) as well as Berwick Academy Grant and Kinsmantown . Athens was organized as a town on March 7, 1804. Parts of Hartland were added in 1821 and parts of Brighton Plantation in 1838 and 1862.
The first settlers were former soldiers of the American Revolutionary War . The Somerset Academy was an early secondary school in the area. The building was entered on the Somerset County's List of Monuments and is now home to the Town Office.
