Athens was organized as a town on March 7, 1804. Parts of Hartland were added in 1821 and parts of Brighton Plantation in 1838 and 1862.

The first settlers were former soldiers of the American Revolutionary War . The Somerset Academy was an early secondary school in the area. The building was entered on the Somerset County's List of Monuments and is now home to the Town Office.
