Josef Gerstmeyer (born March 6, 1801 in Vienna ; † September 14, 1870 there ; also Josef Gerstmayer , Joseph Gerstmaier , Joseph Gerstmayer and Joseph Gerstmeyer ) was an Austrian landscape painter .

Life

Josef Gerstmeyer was the son of a silver worker. From 1815 to 1829 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna , in whose exhibitions he was represented almost every year from 1822 to 1864. Gerstmeyer created oil paintings , watercolors and drawings . Some of his works have been reproduced as lithographs . His motifs were views of Vienna and its surroundings as well as landscapes in Italy and in the Austrian mountains, which he traveled several times. He also published a drawing school with animal studies after Friedrich Gauermann .

Gerstmeyer died of a liver tumor at the age of 69 . Gerstmayerweg in Vienna- Aspern was named after him in 1956 .
