Starks is a town in Somerset County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 640 people lived there in 395 households on an area of 83.22 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Starks has a total area of 83.22 km², of which 81.82 km² is land and 1.40 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Starks is in southwest Somerset County and borders Franklin County to the west . The northeastern part of the town is bounded by the Kennebec River , into which the Sandy River flows from the south and forms the southeastern boundary of the area. There are several small lakes in the town's area. The surface is slightly hilly, the 214 m high Mount Hunger is the highest point in the town.

history
In 1772, James Waugh, who had heard that the New Plymouth Company, as the owner of the Plymouth Claim, also known as the Kennebec Purchase, was offering new settlers the land on favorable terms, was the first to reach the area. Accompanied by his dog, he reached the area with a backpack and a gun across the Kennebec River. In the area of the mouth of the Sandy River, he selected land for a farm. In 1774 he brought his family to join him, as did three other settlers who settled with them in the neighborhood. In 1790 there were already 327 people living in the community.
The Town Starks was organized on February 28, 1795 and named after John Stark , a general who served in the American Continental Army in the Battle of Bennington during the American Revolutionary War. Previously the area was known as the Sandy River Plantation .
Parts of the area were given to Industry in 1822. In 1835 and 1865 further parts were given to Mercer and in 1907 to Norridgewock.
