history

Solon was organized as a town on February 23, 1809 and named after the Athenian statesman and poet Solon . The area was named Township No. 1, Second Range North of Plymouth Claim, East of Kennebec River (T1 R2 NPC EKR) and the previously existing plantation was named Spauldingtown after Thomas Spaulding. Spaulding was one of the owners of the grant to Solon. The first settler in the area was William Hilton of Wiscasset, who settled in 1782. He lived on his farm for 64 years and had 13 children. More settlers reached the area, the community grew and in 1813 the first post office opened in Solon.

Even before the arrival of European settlers, the area was used by the Eastern Abenaki . On a rock near Solon, magical symbols can still be found today, with which the sick were painted. In addition, artifacts such as pottery, knife blades, projectile points and fire pits were discovered in what is now an obvious campsite near the Kennebec River.

Beneath the Caratunk Falls, in today's Arnolds Landing, Benedict Arnold camped with his troops on October 7, 1775 on his campaign to Canada, which ended in the Battle of Québec . At this point they had to carry their boats around the waterfall.

In 1889 Solon was connected to the Oakland – Bingham line .
