The Handbook of North American Indians ("Handbook of the North American Indians") is the standard ethnological encyclopedia for the North American Indians , published since 1978 by the important research and educational institution Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC (USA). William C. Sturtevant is responsible, the manual is written in English . The work is divided into 20 volumes , so far 15 have been published, volume 16 Technology and Visual Arts is to appear next.

The Handbook of North American Indians is structured according to the cultural areas of the ethnologist Alfred Kroeber (Volumes 5 to 15) and supplemented with further volumes:
