Handbook of Middle American Indians

The Handbook of Middle American Indians ("Handbook of the Central American Indians") is the standard ethnological encyclopedia on the indigenous peoples of Central America , published from 1970 and published in Austin by the University of Texas Press . Numerous renowned specialists have collaborated on the work. The American archaeologist and anthropologist Robert Wauchope (1909–1979) at the Middle American Research Institute at Tulane University in New Orleans ( Louisiana ) is responsible as the main editor . The manual is written in English .

The work is divided into 16 volumes and six supplementary volumes which were edited by Victoria Reifler Bricker (born 1940) after the editor's death .
