history

New Portland was organized as a town on March 9, 1808. After the survey, the area was named Township No. 2, Second Range North of Plymouth Claim, West of Kennebec River (T2 R2 NPC WKR) . It was also called East Falmouth because the area was given to the residents of Portland (then Falmouth) by the Massachusetts General Court in 1775 to make up for the damage caused by the devastation caused by British forces. The area was settled from 1785.

Portions of neighboring Anson were added in 1830 and portions of Freeman Township in 1833. Portions of New Vineyard were added in 1834 but returned in 1835.

In New Portland there is a wire suspension bridge that was built in 1842 from wire cables brought in from England. It was listed as a historical monument in 1970.
