The area was named Township No. 2, First Range Bingham's Kennebec Purchase, East of Kennebec River (T2 R1 BKP EKR) . On May 11, 1816, the area was organized as the Town of North Hill . On January 27, 1827, the name was changed to Brighton. The organization as a town was lifted in 1895 and the area has been organized as a plantation ever since. Land was given to neighboring Athens in 1838 and 1862.
