Settlement by European settlers began in 1814. Wellington was organized as a town on February 23, 1828. First, after surveying Township No. 3, First Range Bingham's Kennebec Purchase, East of Kennebec River (T3 R1 BKP EKR) , but also Bridges Town , Bridgestown or Bridgetown . Land was given to neighboring Parkman in 1841 and to Cambridge in 1885.

The town was named after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington .
