S-Bahn in Germany

The Münsterland S-Bahn is a project of the Westphalian city of Münster with the surrounding districts . The network is still in the planning stage and was presented in December 2019.

Planning and implementation

As early as spring 2018, consideration was given to introducing an S-Bahn in the Münsterland. As had been discussed at a conference Münsterland mobility this topic, what also NRW - Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst took part. On December 2, 2019, the mayor of Münster, Markus Lewe , presented the project together with the district administrators of the surrounding districts. With this, the municipalities of the Münsterland are trying to avoid the traffic blackout. The German railway has agreed to participate in the project.

The aim is to create Template: future / in 5 yearsnine S-Bahn lines in Münsterland by 2030 . The network is based on the previous regional train and regional express lines . In addition, the planned resumption of passenger traffic on the WLE route Münster-Sendenhorst is included in the planning. The frequency should be at least 30 minutes on all routes plus an accelerated (regional express) connection. Exceptions to this are the route to Sendenhorst with a 20-minute cycle without further connections and the route to Lünen and Dortmund, which is only served hourly and is to continue to be served. In order to enable the planned expansion of the offer, the track systems have to be expanded in some places . In addition, there are plans to build new stops, especially in the Münster city area, and to extend individual existing lines.

Lines

According to the plans presented, the network is to be implemented by 2030, with Münster serving as the center. The lines are to run from Münster's main station mainly in a star shape to the surrounding area, some of them continue in the form of cross- sectional lines on both sides. The Münster Zentrum Nord and Münster-Hiltrup train stations are also intended to serve as junctions between the lines and bus services in order to relieve the main train station .

In addition, line RE 13 , which currently ends in Hamm Hbf from Venlo via Wuppertal and Hagen, is to be continued via Münster Hbf, Burgsteinfurt and Enschede to Zwolle .

Similarly, the line RE 14, which in the future of food coming in Dorsten to Borken and Coesfeld should winged to be, be continued from Coesfeld to Münster central station.

Another regional express is to run on the route of today's RB 67 from Münster Hbf via Warendorf and Rheda-Wiedenbrück to Bielefeld.

These lines should run once an hour in addition to the respective S-Bahn lines.

In the area of ​​the Münsterland S-Bahn there is also regional train traffic on the Hengelo - Bad Bentheim - Rheine - Ibbenbüren - Osnabrück - Melle - Bünde - Herford - Bielefeld line.

It is also planned to consolidate the network with additional express bus lines .

S1

The S1 line is to replace the current RB 50 line and connect the Münsteraner with the Dortmund main station . Another tour to Gelsenkirchen may also be planned. Because of the single-track sections between Münster and Lünen, only trains will continue to run here every hour, supplemented by the future RRX line 3, which will also run every hour.

S2

Line S2 is to replace today's RE 42 and run from the main train station via Dülmen to Gelsenkirchen.

S3

Line S3 is to replace today's RB 63 and run from the main station to Coesfeld .

S4

The S4 line is to replace today's RB 64 and run from the main train station to Gronau (Westphalia) and every hour to Enschede .

The line S8 is to lead on the reactivated route from the main station to Sendenhorst . In contrast to the other lines, a 20-minute cycle to Wolbeck is planned here. The timetable for the rest of the route to Sendenhorst has not yet been clarified, here two to three trains per hour should run (i.e. a 30 or 20/40 minute cycle or a continuous 20 minute cycle).
