S-Bahn in Germany

The S-Bahn Mittelelbe (until 2014: S-Bahn Magdeburg) is part of the local public transport in the greater area of the Saxony-Anhalt state capital Magdeburg . The S-Bahn is operated by DB Regio Südost , under the Elbe-Saale-Bahn brand , on behalf of Nahverkehrsservice Sachsen-Anhalt GmbH .

history

The Magdeburg S-Bahn was opened on September 29, 1974 on a 38-kilometer line on the Zielitz – Magdeburg – Schönebeck – Salzelmen route in a north-south direction. The Schönebeck-Frohse, Schönebeck Süd and Zielitz Ort stops were only opened after 1974. The Barleber See stop is only held between the beginning of May and the end of October; it is used to reach the lake of the same name, which is located north of Magdeburg. During the GDR era, there was also an hourly connection between Schönebeck and Haldensleben with an S-Bahn set shortened by one wagon and a DR class 110 or 112 diesel locomotive. This train could be used as far as Magdeburg-Rothensee at the S-Bahn tariff become.

From December 9, 2007 to December 13, 2014, S-Bahn line 1 was only operated Mondays to Fridays, with the exception of a few trains on the edge of the day; at the weekend the stops were served by the regional trains. On December 14, 2014, the previous regional train from / to Wittenberge was now integrated into S-Bahn line 1 from / to Stendal in order to end the parallel service by two different types of train between Schönebeck-Salzelmen and Zielitz Ort. In Bahnhof Stendal then carried out a Zuggattungswechsel, had to change trains without passengers. As a result, the S-Bahn line 1 between Schönebeck-Salzelmen and Zielitz Ort again runs every 30 minutes on weekdays, and after seven years it runs every hour again on weekends. Due to the extension to the surrounding area, the original name S-Bahn Magdeburg has now been replaced by the current name S-Bahn Mittelelbe .

With the timetable change on December 13, 2015, the type change in Stendal was completely omitted, so that the trains already run as S-Bahn from / to Wittenberge. Mon-Fri in the morning hours, the service between Zielitz and Stendal has been expanded by two additional pairs of trains, so that there is a 30-minute cycle. A few trains in Stendal from / to Salzwedel are tied through with the regional train 32, but with a change of class in Stendal. In addition, there is an S1X train from Magdeburg to Wittenberge and back during rush hour, which does not stop at all stops in order to be able to connect to long-distance traffic.

For the S-Bahn Magdeburg as well as for all regional trains running parallel to the S-Bahn, a special S-Bahn tariff based on the model of the earlier DR-S-Bahn was in effect until the introduction of the Magdeburg Regional Transport Association (marego) on December 12, 2010 Rates. In contrast to these, the Magdeburg S-Bahn tariff was not introduced until February 1, 1994. There used to be separate S-Bahn tariffs in the cities of Berlin , Dresden , Erfurt , Leipzig / Halle and Rostock . In contrast to Magdeburg, however, these were replaced much earlier by transport associations or, in the case of Erfurt, by the abandonment of the S-Bahn.

The Magdeburg S-Bahn tariff was a little cheaper than the national local transport tariff. Unlike the latter, it was not based on the distance actually covered, but on a zone system. There were three zones in total:

  • "North tariff zone" (Zielitz and Wolmirstedt)
  • "City tariff zone" (Magdeburg city area)
  • "South tariff zone" (Schönebeck)

The “city tariff zone” was always charged twice, so that there were a total of four price levels. In addition to single tickets, multi- trip tickets, weekly tickets and monthly tickets were also offered for the Magdeburg S-Bahn, but no day tickets (with the exception of the “weekend family ticket”). In addition, the S-Bahn tariff also applied to the Magdeburg-Neustadt – Magdeburg-Herrenkrug section.

For commuters and frequent travelers who wanted to switch between the S-Bahn and local public transport in Magdeburg, there was the superordinate MUM tariff (Magdeburg-Umland-Tarif), which also included the Magdeburg transport company , regardless of the S-Bahn tariff . However, the MUM tariff was not a real transport association , because only season tickets (but no single tickets) were offered. As a result, for single trips in the Magdeburg region, a new ticket had to be purchased every time you change from the S-Bahn to another public transport.

Vehicle use

Typical for the Magdeburg S-Bahn in GDR times were the trains made of green LOWA-E5 cars (center entry car). Double-decker single wagons were used from 1990, and in some cases four-part DBv double-decker trains were also used in the early 1990s. Today class 425 railcars operate on the S1 line . In 2015 they were modernized and received new seats, folding tables, sockets and an improved passenger information system.

future

The 2005 public transport plan of the state of Saxony-Anhalt provided for the conversion of several RB lines into S-Bahn lines for the period 2010 to 2015 or 2025. These plans for a regional S-Bahn network were promoted primarily under Transport Minister Karl-Heinz Daehre . By canceling the route to Loburg and implementing other concepts, which are also reflected in the corresponding award procedures, the original concept has become superfluous. The RB 42 line to Zerbst and Dessau has become part of the Mitteldeutsche S-Bahn-Netz II procurement network .

The S1 and RB40 lines (Braunschweig – Magdeburg – Burg) are to be the basic framework for the future S-Bahn network. Further connections to Langenweddingen (as a replacement for the RB to Oschersleben) and Haldensleben are to be integrated in the future. The planned operating concepts are, however, dependent on expansion measures on the Magdeburg – Oschersleben – Halberstadt and Magdeburg – Haldensleben – Oebisfelde railway lines and are to be driven permanently with diesel traction.
