The Elbe-Saale-Bahn is a brand that DB Regio uses for local rail passenger transport in Saxony-Anhalt as well as in parts of Lower Saxony , Brandenburg , Saxony and Thuringia .

Altmark-Börde-Anhalt network

After the tender for the northern Harz network , which was awarded to the then Connex Regiobahn (today Transdev GmbH ) at the beginning of 2004, the second major competitive process in local rail passenger transport in Saxony-Anhalt began with the tender for the Altmark-Börde-Anhalt network . For Saxony-Anhalt, the authorities responsible for this sub-network were the state-owned local transport service Saxony-Anhalt and the Braunschweig area association for the Lower Saxony sections of the route. DB Regio applied with its subsidiary Harzbahn, which was originally founded in 2003 for the northern Harz network. Due to its geographical location, the company was renamed Elbe-Saale-Bahn GmbH (based in Magdeburg ) until operations began in December 2006 . With retroactive effect to January 1, 2007, Elbe-Saale-Bahn GmbH was merged with its parent company DB Regio AG. The operation was carried out under the brand name Elbe-Saale-Bahn. The transport contract came into effect with the timetable change on December 10, 2006 and had a term of twelve years. This network consists mainly of non-electrified railway lines. Overall, the Elbe-Saale-Bahn operated 3.4 million train kilometers per year on the approximately 390-kilometer route network. The tender saved around one million euros in annual grant costs.

Electric network Saxony-Anhalt North

On December 15, 2013, the Elbe-Saale-Bahn started operating on the Saxony-Anhalt North electrical network . Electric locomotives with 69 new double-decker cars as well as electric multiple units from the ET 425 series are used . Every year, 6.3 million train kilometers are provided on a 480-kilometer network with 64 stops. The term is fifteen years. All vehicles in the electric network have free WiFi.

Central German S-Bahn network II

On December 13, 2015, DB Regio put the Central German S-Bahn network II into operation. The RB and RE lines were assigned the Elbe-Saale-Bahn brand and the S 2 to the S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland brand . Up until the commissioning of the newly built Bombardier Talent 2 electric multiple units, partly air-conditioned, locomotive-hauled double-decker trains as well as vehicles from Central German S-Bahn network I were used. With the timetable change on December 10, 2017, the lines RB 80 between Halle and Lutherstadt Wittenberg and RB 75 between Halle and Eilenburg were integrated into the S-Bahn network as S 8 and S 9. The later commissioning was justified with the construction work in Halle (Saale) main station .

With the timetable change on December 15, 2019, the services of the RB 42 Magdeburg – Dessau line were integrated into the RE 13 Magdeburg – Dessau – Leipzig line, which has been running every hour instead of every two hours since then.

vehicles

The Elbe-Saale-Bahn used 27 Desiro Classic diesel multiple units from Siemens TS on the Altmark-Börde-Anhalt network . The trains with the DB series designation 642 previously operated with the parent company DB Regio and were specially converted for use. Among other things, the seats have been retrofitted with armrests and small wall tables, a video surveillance system has been installed and sliding steps have been installed on the doors to bridge the gap between the vehicle and the platform edge, after the low-floor construction has already given preconditions for barrier-free boarding. In addition, the railcars had, among other things, air conditioning , a ticket machine and a multi-purpose compartment with a disabled toilet in a railcar section. The trains were marked on the outer side walls with the company name and the state coat of arms of Saxony-Anhalt together with its advertising slogan. On some of the advertised routes, the Desiro railcars were already in use before the new transport contract came into force, such as between Stendal and Tangermünde or Magdeburg and Aschersleben.
