The station Calbe (Saale) Ost is next to Calbe (Saale) West and Calbe (Saale) Stadt one of three stations in the city of Calbe (Saale) in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt . It was opened in 1839, making it one of the oldest train stations in Saxony-Anhalt. It is located at the Magdeburg-Leipzig Railway and is on the branching point Tornitz with the Berlin-Blankenheim Railway connected. Freight traffic has not taken place since 1995. The station is a listed building.

location

The train station is located in the far east of the Calbens urban area. It belongs to the unofficial district of Grizehne . It is over three kilometers as the crow flies from the city center. The stop and the other train station are two and four kilometers away. About two kilometers to the north, the Magdeburg – Leipzig route crosses the Berlin – Blankenheim route.

In the immediate vicinity of the train station there is an industrial area and a small settlement. Due to this decentralized location of the Ostbahnhof and also that of the Westbahnhof, low passenger numbers were measured for a long time on the entire line to Bernburg. That is why it was considered to stop passenger traffic on that route. The Calbe (Saale) Stadt stop, which was newly established on December 22, 2014 and is much more central, is intended to increase the overall number of passengers in Calbe.

Designations

The Calbe Ost train station has been renamed several times over the years:

  • "Station on the Saale" (September 9, 1839 - December 5, 1876)
  • "Calbe a Saale" (December 6, 1876 - August 30, 1882)
  • "Grizehne bei Calbe (S)" (September 1, 1882 - October 30, 1911)
  • "Calbe (Saale) Ost" (since November 1, 1911)

history

On September 8, 1839, the line from Magdeburg to Calbe was completed. The next day the station was opened. The construction of the first station building in Calbe was associated with the further construction of the line towards Köthen. It was probably a half-timbered house. It was demolished in 1894 and a new building was then built, which still exists today but is no longer in use.

Platforms (2013)

In 1879 the Berlin – Blankenheim (Kanonenbahn) line went into operation, which also received a train station in Calbe (now called Calbe (Saale) West ). This was only about one kilometer from the city center and thus much closer than the train station in Grizehne (today Calbe (Saale) Ost). In 1882 a connection line between the two stations went into operation for freight traffic. In 1890/91, a branch line to Bernburg for passenger and freight traffic went into operation from the station on the Kanonenbahn , with the passenger trains continuing over the connecting line to the station in Grizehne.

The branch line from Bernburg also played an important role in freight traffic at Grizehne station. Machines on the branch line did the shunting work.

Reception building (2013)

In 1891 the Royal Railway Directorate Magdeburg came up with a first draft for the construction of a two-room locomotive shed. The planned length was given as 39 meters. There should be exits on both gable sides. But this shed was never built. Its location and the reason for the construction not started are not known.

After the First World War , there was extensive freight traffic. For this reason, the Reichsbahn-Verkehrsamt Aschersleben considered canceling a passenger train in the morning. Instead, a bus should run between the two Calbens train stations. It is not clear whether this proposal was actually implemented.

In 1933 the station was rebuilt. The electrification of the line between Magdeburg and Leipzig and the associated new construction of the Saale bridge began. All tracks and the central platform had to be relocated for this. The same applied to the platform roofing built in 1900, which was moved about 60 centimeters to the east. The track systems of the branch line and freight traffic were not affected by this work.

Central platform (2013)

After the Second World War , another small locomotive shed was planned at the request of the railway master's office at the station. This building was never built either.

The station's heyday began in 1951 when the low-shaft furnace went into operation. There was a siding from the train station to the factory premises. From 1915 to 1991 a gelatine factory was also used for freight transport.

The Calbens train station had two signal boxes. One of them was the dispatcher interlocking called "Cn" and the other was a guard interlocking called "Cs". On December 1, 1959, a new signal box was put into operation, which was converted in the 1970s.

After the turning point in 1990, a number of large plants were closed. Successor companies often did without a siding, so that freight traffic quickly came to a standstill. Locomotive-hauled trains ran on the branch line until around 1995, for which bypass tracks had to be available in the station. When they switched to railcar traffic, those tracks were no longer necessary so that they could be dismantled. On January 1, 1995, freight traffic was officially discontinued. After that, ticket issuance also closed.

In 1999 an electronic signal box was set up in Leipzig . All track systems that were no longer needed were dismantled. The Calbe Ost station has been vacant since then.

At the southern head of the station, a crossing with stairs and an elevator was built in 2001. This connects platform 1 with platforms 2 and 3 (all 155 meters long). The former platform tunnel was backfilled.

In the first half of 2018, the house and central platform were renewed for 900,000 euros and raised to a height of 55 centimeters. A redesign of the station area is planned for 2019. At the same time, the listed station building, which essentially dates back to 1839 and is unique in Saxony-Anhalt, will also be demolished. The construction work for this began on September 18, 2019. Given the condition of the building after years of neglect, the monument authority had given up the resistance to the demolition plans.
