The Calbe (Saale) West train station in the town of Calbe (Saale) in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt went into operation in 1879. Along with the Calbe (Saale) Ost train station and the Calbe (Saale) Stadt stop, it is one of three train stations in the city. Here the Bernburg – Calbe (Saale) railway branches off from the Berlin – Blankenheim railway line , with the section in the direction of Güsten already closed on the latter line . The station building is a listed building .

location

The Calbe (Saale) West train station is located at kilometer 130.7 on the Berlin – Blankenheim line , also known as the Kanonenbahn. In addition, the Bernburg – Calbe (Saale) railway ends at the station .

The train station is located on the western edge of the city and just over a kilometer from the town center. The train station is directly adjacent to Bahnhofstrasse and Am Bahnhof Calbe / West . The Glöther Weg crosses the route under a bridge.

The Calbe (Saale) Stadt stop is about one and a half kilometers to the east. To the south-west in the direction of Güsten and Blankenheim, the nearest train station was Neugattersleben , eight kilometers away; in the direction of Berlin, the nearest train station is Barby station, around ten kilometers to the northeast. In between, about four kilometers from the Calbe (Saale) West train station, the line to Calbe (Saale) East branches off at the Tornitz junction. The Calbe (Saale) Stadt stop was opened two kilometers from the train station in 2014.

On the branch line to Bernburg, the next station is the former train station and current stop at Nienburg (Saale) , which is about eight kilometers away.

Designations

The name of the Calbe West station has changed several times over the course of history:

  • "Stadt-Calbe" (1879–1901)
  • "Calbe a Saale" (1901–1908)
  • "Calbe aS" (1908–1913)
  • "Calbe (Saale) West" (since August 18, 1913)

history

With the commissioning of the Berlin – Blankenheim railway line (Kanonenbahn) in 1879, a station called “Stadt-Calbe” went into operation. In 1890 the line to Bernburg was added. As a result, freight traffic and the associated shunting activities increased. The station Güsten at the Kanonenbahn quickly came to its capacity limits. The Ilberstedt and Baalberge stations should be expanded to relieve Güstener Bahnhof. In 1900, an additional passing track with the designation "III a" was also built in the Westbahnhof in Calbens. At that time these points were still operated locally.

Platform access and outbuildings (2012)

The station building was expanded in the period before the First World War . This affected the counter hall and the creation of new service rooms. More loading sills were added to the loading line. In 1911 a new express goods shed was built near the water tower .

In the 1950s, a low- shaft furnace was built in Calbe. This involved the construction of an extensive industrial railway network. This was connected to both Calbens train stations. In the Westbahnhof, this began at the northern head of the station in the immediate vicinity of the reception building. After the plant had ceased operations in 1970 and successor companies no longer needed such a large factory railway network, the track systems were dismantled. A track plan from 1980 shows that there were still a number of loading tracks, but only two sidings.

On May 24, 1998, passenger traffic from Calbe in the direction of Güsten ended. Up until 2004, a pair of trains ran on this route at the weekend, but they did not stop in Calbe West. Freight traffic on this section of the route ceased on January 2, 2002. At this point in time, there was no longer any ticket issuance.

In 2008 there were renovations. Only switch 3 and signals C and L on track 3 remained. In 2012/13 the tracks of the Kanonenbahn were partially dismantled. In addition, track 3 in the station and signals C and L were dismantled. A loading track to a local fuel dealer is located on track 1, branches off at switch 9 and is secured by a track lock.

Reception building

The building on the south-east side of the track was built with the opening of the train station in 1878/79 and corresponds to the standard construction type for larger stations on the route. It is essentially identical in its design to the station buildings in Bad Belzig , Barby , Hettstedt and Klostermansfeld .

The reception building is a two-storey, seven-axis brick building with a hipped roof with an adjoining three-axis restaurant wing. In the central part of the building there were ticket offices, service rooms and the first and second class waiting room, the upper floor accommodated service apartments for railway employees.

The station had a house platform at the station building and a central platform accessible from it. The main platform is still in use, the part of the platform used is 60 meters long and 2 centimeters high.

Signal boxes

The first signal box was located in the triangle of the forked routes. It was initially called "WB I". 1911 was called "Cw" in a track plan. A new mechanical signal box, also "Cw", of the unit type, was built in 1936 to the west on the opposite side of the cannon track. Another signal box called “Cof” was added in 1902, and a new lever bench of the Jüdel design was installed around 1914. After the track system had been expanded to connect the shaft furnace works, a third signal box was probably built in the early 1950s. It was one of the type unit with the designation "W1". The command signal box opposite the station building was given the designation B2 , the signal box at the fork in the route W3 .

After the W1 signal box was closed on June 10, 1980, the other signal boxes were renamed. Of B2 was B1 and from W3 W2 . The B1 signal box was decommissioned on November 16, 2013. The previous W2 signal box at the south exit of the station was converted into a command signal box, which is now called B2 .

passenger traffic

Since the establishment of the line to Bernburg and the connection to Calbe Ost, the station has been used almost exclusively by through trains on the Berlin-Blankenheim route on the one hand and by trains from Calbe Ost to Bernburg on the other. On the other hand, there were continuous trains from Calbe Ost in the direction of Güsten or from Barby to Bernburg only in exceptional cases. At times, Calbe (Saale) West was also a stop for long-distance trains, for example an express train from Berlin to Trier and in the opposite direction stopped at the station in the years before the First World War .

In 1998, continuous travel between Barby and Güsten via Calbe West ended, and since then only the regional trains between Calbe East and Bernburg have stopped at the station. Currently (timetable year 2019) the regional train line RB 48 operated by Abellio Rail Mitteldeutschland serves the station. The trains to and from Magdeburg are tied through from Monday to Friday .

In addition, local bus lines connect the station with the center of Calbe, Barby , Staßfurt , Schönebeck , Magdeburg , Nienburg and Bernburg, among others .
