The Bernburg – Calbe (Saale) line is a branch line in Saxony-Anhalt . It runs from Bernburg (Saale) via Nienburg (Saale) to Calbe . The connection to the Magdeburg – Leipzig main line is via the Berlin – Blankenheim line and a short connecting line between the two lines.

Route description

The route lies in the Salzlandkreis and connects the district town of Bernburg (Saale) with the town of Calbe . Both places are on the Saale . The line branches off in the west of the city of Bernburg from the Köthen – Aschersleben railway line . The tracks on both lines run parallel for a short distance, in this area is the Bernburg-Waldau stop, which only has a platform on the line to Calbe. Then the route turns north. To the north of the small town of Nienburg (Saale) , it runs several kilometers along the river. In the west of the city of Calbe the line joins the Berlin – Blankenheim railway line , which has already been closed in this area in the direction of Güsten . The Calbe (Saale) West train station is about one kilometer northwest of the city center. The landscape along the route is largely flat or slightly wavy.

history

The Bernburg-Waldau-Calbe (Saale) West line was opened as a branch line on August 15, 1890 by the Prussian State Railways . In 1934, a siding to the Bernburger Junkerswerke was set up and a Junkerswerke stop was opened. The Bernburg-Waldau stop was established in 1952 and the Strenzfeld stop in 1958 . In 1960 a cement plant was built north of Bernburg . It was connected to the Bernburg – Calbe (Saale) Ost railway line by an approximately 1.5-kilometer-long connecting railway via a triangular track, so that it can be approached from both directions.

In 2006 the Elbe-Saale-Bahn took over passenger transport on the route.

From 2008 to 2010 the line was expanded to increase the maximum speed to 80 km / h. It is hoped that the opening of the new Calbe (Saale) Stadt stop and the newly established direct connections to Schönebeck (Elbe) and Magdeburg will result in higher passenger numbers so that passenger traffic can be secured in the long term. Since the passenger numbers developed positively and there was planning security with regard to the regionalization funds, the allocation of the route within the framework of the Saxony-Anhalt diesel network was announced in February 2017. It was originally only included as an option and was not ordered immediately when Abellio was awarded the contract. With the change of operator in December 2018, the trains will be linked through Bernberg to Halle.

The route is now served every two hours by the RB48 line. The Bernburg cement works will continue to be used for freight transport.

Vehicle use

Until 2002, passenger trains were railcars of series 771 and 772 down. They were replaced by trains from the DB class 628 , followed by class 642 diesel multiple units. LINT-41 multiple units have been in use since December 2018 .
