The Salzwedel train station is the train station of the district town of Salzwedel in the Altmark . Up until 2004 it was still an important railway junction, however, due to the closure of all branches, it has lost much of its importance to this day. Only one railway line still leads through Salzwedel.

history

The former depot now houses a railway museum

The Salzwedel station was built in 1870 as part of the construction of the Stendal – Uelzen railway line (part of the “ Amerikalinie ” from Berlin to Bremen / Bremerhaven ) by the Magdeburg-Halberstädter Railway Company . From the Salzwedel train station or the Salzwedel Neustadt train station located immediately to the east, railway lines used to run in seven directions, as the overview on the right shows. A depot was built right next to the station to serve these routes . During the Second World War , an air raid on February 22, 1945 destroyed the station area and killed around 300 people. Of the seven lines, only the Stendal – Uelzen line remained, which was interrupted during the time of the division of Germany and has been continuously passable again since December 19, 1999. After reunification, it was electrified and extensively modernized in order to serve as an alternative route for the ICE trains from Berlin to Hamburg .

On the branch lines it was most recently the course book line 303 Salzwedel – Wittenberge , which was shut down when the timetable changed in December 2004. It had previously been upgraded: The decades-old “ piglet tax ” had been replaced by modern “ Desiro ” low-floor multiple units from Siemens in 2003. But neither the new railcar nor a specially founded citizens' initiative could save the route.

Today's train station

The area around the station was completely redesigned at the end of the 1990s. The German railway renovated the reception building and erected two new island platforms , which can be reached by a new underpass, the input of an extension of the station building gave way. The city of Salzwedel completed the area with a new bus station on the station forecourt and a large Park & Ride area.

The reception building was auctioned in 2015 and is privately owned. At the beginning of 2019, the renovation work, which was funded with 845,000 euros from the REVITA program for the revitalization of train station buildings, was completed. Since then, travelers have been able to use the waiting hall and a person-operated ticket sale again.
