history
Origin of the place name
The Franconian Reichsannalen already mentioned the eponymous lake in 822 as Arnseo . In 1150 Saxo called the village Arnsee , in 1183 it was called Arnse und Arnes (s) e. The first part of the word came from Arn, the short form of an Old Saxon personal name. This was changed to Arnd 1312, Arndt 1483, Arnt 1440 and finally extended to Arend 1556.
Arendsee in German Tell was amazingly close to the onomastic statement linked the local people with the name Arend and a local lake:
“The following is told about the Arendsee in the Altmark: At the point where the lake and the place of this name are now, there used to be a large castle. All of a sudden this went under, and nothing more escaped than a man and a woman. As the two of them were going away, the woman looked around roughly and was aware of the rapid change. Surprised, she broke into the words: "Arend see!" (Arend see! That was her husband's name) and that is why the name of the little town that was built on the lake was given afterwards. In this lake the finest, white sand sticks out, and when the sun shines brightly, you should still see all the walls and buildings of the sunken castle (as is the case with Lake Brock next to the Ossenberg). Some have once intended to found the water and let in a rope; when pulled out, there was a note on it with the command: "Leave your company, otherwise what happened to your place will happen to it."
The Brothers Grimm quote the legend from Johannes Praetorius' description of the world.
From the Middle Ages to today
The Franconian Reichsannalen reported in 822 in connection with the collapse of a salt dome from Arnseo - the Arendsee .
In 1183 the Arendsee Monastery was founded, a Benedictine monastery founded by Margrave Otto I , son of Albrecht the Bear . The Romanesque monastery church, built from 1185 onwards, has been preserved.
Arendsee received city rights in 1457 under Elector Friedrich II of Brandenburg. During the Thirty Years War , the city of Arendsee was plundered several times. In 1685, the town's mill sank when a salt dome collapsed into the lake, giving it its present form. It is the largest lake in northern Germany. In 1831 a chapel that had existed in the village since 1381 burned down. Today's St. John's Church was built in 1881/82 . Starting in 1910, the traveling preacher gustaf nagel built the gustaf nagel area on the banks of the Arendsee, which is only partially preserved today . From 1939 the house built in 1837/38 for the city school was used as the Arendsee town hall . In 1942, Hitler Youth students destroyed the gardens and temples of gustaf nagels.
During the GDR era, Arendsee had a significant amount of tourism. The lake and its surroundings were, to a certain extent, a substitute for the Baltic Sea beach. Numerous holiday homes and a campsite served as accommodation. Since the fall of the Wall , the number of day-trippers has remained high, but the number of overnight stays has fallen sharply. The KiEZ Arendsee children's holiday camp has been offering holiday camps since the GDR era. It was built and maintained by VEB Schwermaschinenbau " Karl Liebknecht " Magdeburg. At that time it was named after the Chairman of the KPF, Maurice Thorez .
The district of Arendsee (Altmark) has the status of a state-recognized health resort. The city belonged to the district of Osterburg until June 30, 1994 .
Incorporations
On April 1, 1928, the estate district Arendsee-Remontedepot in the district of Osterburg was united with the municipality of Arendsee in the same district. A few months later, on October 17, 1928, the part of the estate district Arendsee, Forst located on the lake was united with the municipality of Arendsee. The remaining uninhabited part on the Hanoverian border was merged with the rural community of Ziemendorf.
On July 1, 1950, the previously independent municipality Gestien was incorporated.
On January 1, 2010, the formerly independent communities of Binde , Höwisch , Kaulitz , Kerkau , Kläden , Kleinau , Leppin , Neulingen , Sanne-Kerkuhn , Schrampe , Thielbeer and Ziemendorf were incorporated into the town of Arendsee (Altmark). Arendsee became a unified municipality , the administrative community Arendsee-Kalbe , based in Arendsee, was dissolved.

badges and flags
The coat of arms was awarded on September 20, 1938 by the Upper President of the Province of Saxony.
Blazon : "In silver, a gold-armored red eagle over a blue corrugated shield base with five silver waves."
When Arendsee first had a coat of arms can no longer be determined. Earlier emblems contained the flying Prussian eagle, with crown, scepter and imperial orb, as well as thirteen water lilies, which meant the number of council members. However, they were abandoned as "gimmicks from the century of heraldic decay". The Brandenburg eagle shown today marks the affiliation of the city to the Mark Brandenburg, the water surface symbolizes the nearby Arendsee.
The coat of arms was designed by the Magdeburg State Archives Councilor Otto Korn .
The city's flag is striped white and red and has the city coat of arms in the center.
Town twinning

In the northeast of the city, near the lake, there is a lido with a sandy beach and a lake stand , which is open from May to September. A nearby campsite has 320 permanent campsites and generously wooded areas for around 150 tourist campers. The JugendFilmCamp has been located there since 2013, giving an insight into the various specialist areas of film production . Within a week, short films are made there that are produced by young people aged 16 and over. Lecturers who are active both in artistic practice and in training work on the conception and implementation of the JugendFilmCamp.
The KiEZ Arendsee holiday complex is located on a nine-hectare site in the east of the city . In addition to the lake and the monastery grounds, the gustaf-nagel area on the south bank of the lake is one of the tourist attractions .
traffic
Arendsee was connected to the railway network in 1908 by the Arendsee – Stendal small railway. From 1922 the city was also the most important intermediate station on the Salzwedel – Wittenberge railway line - one of the last branch lines to be built in Germany. The line to Stendal has been closed since 1978 and the connection to Salzwedel / Wittenberge has been without train traffic since 2004. At times there were plans to route the route for nuclear waste in Castor containers via the Salzwedel – Arendsee railway line and from there via roads to nearby Gorleben . But these plans were dropped again. Today Arendsee can be reached with the 200- cycle bus from the state network Saxony-Anhalt .

The 2011 census in the European Union showed that of the 7,280 inhabitants of the city of Arendsee (Altmark) around 29% belonged to the Protestant and around 4% to the Catholic Church.
The Protestant church belongs to the parish Arendsee Arendsee area of the church district Stendal in Propst Sprengel Stendal Magdeburg of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany . The church of the former Arendsee monastery belongs to it .
