Mechau is a village and part of the town of Arendsee (Altmark) in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt .

geography

The Altmark church village is on the border with Lower Saxony . The Flötgraben flows to the east.

traffic

The Mechau stop is on the Salzwedel – Geestgottberg railway line, which was closed in 2004 .

history

Mechau was probably first mentioned in a document in 1268 as Mechowe when Margrave Otto presented the St. Georg Hospital in Salzwedel with properties in Riebow, Mechau and Thüritz.

In the Landbuch der Mark Brandenburg from 1375 the place is also listed as Mechowe . The von Jagow , the Hospital zu St. Georg in Salzwedel and the Clüden owned here.

The name Mechowe was also used in the 18th century . Fabri reports in 1796: Except for a blacksmith, a wheel maker and a linen weaver there are no craftsmen here. Agriculture and animal husbandry are the main branches of food. In a fire at the beginning of the 18th century, all the old local news was lost.

Zahn tells of a song in a legend about a battle near Mechau during the Thirty Years' War.

There was a windmill south of the village . There was a water mill in the village.

Incorporations

On July 1, 1950, the municipality Mechau was from the district Osterburg in Salzwedel reclassified.

On January 1, 2011, the municipality of Mechau was incorporated into the city of Arendsee (Altmark) and thus became the village of Mechau with the district of Mechau.

The Protestant parish and parish Mechau belong to the parish area Fleetmark-Jeetze of the parish of Salzwedel in the Provostspengel Stendal-Magdeburg of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

In 1903 the parish Mechau belonged to the parish of Mechau bei Binde (Altmark) in the district of Osterburg and the parish of Ritzleben in the district of Salzwedel. The church patronage in Mechau was with Major a. D. von Jagow auf Pollitz and manor owner von Jagow auf Aulosen, the patronage in Ritzleben was with the Imperial Baron von dem Knesebeck-Milenbonck.

Culture and sights

  • The church in Mechau is a new brick building from the years 1897 and 1898 which was attached to the field stone tower of the old church from the 13th century. The roofs are covered with slate.
Foundling with the inscription "Be worthy of the fathers."
  • In the central square of the village with oaks protected as natural monuments, a large boulder with the inscription "Be worth the fathers" commemorates the war victims of 1813.
