geography

location

The Salzwedel district was in the northern Altmark on the inner-German border . The most important body of water was the Jeetze .

Neighboring areas

The district of Salzwedel bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the (rural) districts of Lüchow-Dannenberg , Seehausen (until 1965), Osterburg , Kalbe (Milde) (until 1987) and Gardelegen (from 1988), Klötze , Gifhorn and Uelzen .

history

On July 25, 1952, there was an extensive administrative reform in the GDR , during which, among other things, the states of the GDR lost their importance and new districts were established. The then district of Salzwedel gave municipalities to the districts of Kalbe (Milde) and Klötze . The new Salzwedel district with its seat in Salzwedel was formed from the remaining district area . The district was assigned to the newly formed Magdeburg district.

On January 1, 1988, the Salzwedel district was enlarged to include parts of the disbanded Kalbe (Milde) district.

On May 17, 1990, the district was renamed the Salzwedel district. On the occasion of the reunification of the two German states, the district was awarded to the re-established state of Saxony-Anhalt in 1990. During the first district reform in Saxony-Anhalt , which came into force on July 1, 1994, it was absorbed in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel.
