geography

The Altmark Valfitz, a street village with a church, is located two kilometers south of Kuhfelde and 11 kilometers south of the district town of Salzwedel . From there it can be reached via the B 248 and the district roads 1382 and 1402. In the west the Schleege and the Jeetze flow .

history

In 1290, Volmarus de Velevisz was mentioned. Valfitz was first mentioned in 1318 as Velevitze or “Veleuitze”. In 1320 Joannes Veleuitz was a councilor of the Neustadt Salzwedel.

In the Landbuch der Mark Brandenburg from 1375 the village is listed in the three spellings Velvitze, Velsithe and Velfische . It belonged to Dambeck Abbey . In 1801 the village was named Valwitz .

The living space Große Mühle with a water mill is 1.5 kilometers northeast of the village on the Jeetze and was mentioned as early as 1801. The mill was called Großemühle in 1864, Großemühle in 1868 and Großmühle in 1871 and is now a listed building.

The historian Peter P. Rohrlach points out that the donation of the place mentioned by Hermes and Weigelt in 1261 from Countess Oda von Dannenberg to the Dambeck monastery cannot be proven.

In 1953 the first type III agricultural production cooperative, the LPG “Neues Leben” Valfitz-Schieben, was founded. In 1955 it was connected to the LPG “Happy Future” in Altensalzwedel.
