The district of Zerbst
in the district of Magdeburg

The Zerbst district was a district in the Magdeburg district of the GDR . From 1990 to 1994 it existed as the district of Zerbst in the state of Saxony-Anhalt . His area is now in the districts of Anhalt-Bitterfeld and Jerichower Land in Saxony-Anhalt. The seat of the district administration was in Zerbst .

geography

The Zerbst district was north of Dessau on the right bank of the Elbe . It bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the districts of Loburg (until 1957) and Burg and Brandenburg (from 1957), Belzig , Roßlau , Köthen and Schönebeck .

history

A district of Zerbst had existed in Anhalt since 1863 , which had belonged to the state of Saxony-Anhalt since 1945 and thus to the GDR since 1949. On July 25, 1952, there was an extensive administrative reform in the GDR , during which, among other things, the states of the GDR lost their importance and new districts were established. The then district of Zerbst gave municipalities to the new district of Roßlau . The new Zerbst district with its seat in Zerbst was formed from the remaining district area . The district was assigned to the newly formed Magdeburg district .

On June 20, 1957, the district of Zerbst was enlarged to include parts of the dissolved Loburg district .

On May 17, 1990, the district was renamed the Zerbst district. On the occasion of the reunification of the two German states, the district was awarded to the re-established state of Saxony-Anhalt in 1990. During the first district reform in Saxony-Anhalt , which came into force on July 1, 1994, it became part of the Anhalt-Zerbst district .
