history

On July 25, 1952, there was an extensive administrative reform in the GDR , during which, among other things, the states of the GDR lost their importance and new districts were established. The then district of Stendal gave municipalities to the districts of Osterburg , Kalbe (Milde) and Tangerhütte . The new Stendal district with its seat in Stendal was formed from the remaining district area . The district was assigned to the newly formed Magdeburg district .

On January 1, 1988, the Stendal district was enlarged to include parts of the dissolved Tangerhütte district.

On May 17, 1990 the district was renamed the district of Stendal. On the occasion of the reunification of the two German states, the district was awarded to the re-established state of Saxony-Anhalt in 1990. During the district reform , which came into force on July 1, 1994, it became part of the new districts of Stendal and Börde.
