history

The name Bittkau is of Wendish origin, the place was first mentioned in a document as Bithui in 1130 . The Bittkau Church was built around 1200. Shipping on the Elbe has determined the development of the community since the Plauer Canal was built and expanded in 1860. Bittkau was a ferry location for 150 years (until 1970). In the place of the old ferry there is now a landing stage for passenger ships and pleasure craft.

On September 30, 1928, the manor district of Bittkau was combined with the rural community of Bittkau.

On May 31, 2010, Bittkau merged with the other municipalities of the Tangerhütte-Land administrative community to form the new town of Tangerhütte.

Blazon : "Split of silver and green over a blue corrugated shield base, in front a black anchor with a looped blue anchor rope, at the back a golden ear of wheat and a silver square measure, crossed at an angle, a silver fish in the shield base."

The local colors are green - silver (white).

The coat of arms was designed by the Magdeburg municipal heraldist Jörg Mantzsch and included in the approval process. It refers to the Elbe, shipping, fishing and carpentry.

The flag is green and white (1: 1) striped (horizontal shape: stripes running horizontally, longitudinal shape: stripes running vertically) and centered with the municipal coat of arms.

Culture and sights

The Evangelical Church of Bittkau is a rectangular, elongated hall church with a square west tower. While the western part of the nave is made of field stones from a smaller, Romanesque village church from the 13th century, the attached western tower is much more recent. The east side extension of the ship was made of bricks .

A memorial stone on Poststrasse commemorates the victims of fascism , who in the broadest sense also include those soldiers of Wenck's Army who committed suicide in 1945 for fear of being taken prisoner by the Soviets .

There is a petting zoo at the Kellerwiehl campsite.
