geography

The Altmark village of Briest is located two kilometers northeast of Tangerhütte and is surrounded by forest in the east and north.

history

Originally, Briest was a church village and a manor suitable for the state assembly . In 1345 Nikolaus von Bismarck received the Vorwerk Briest together with Burgstall Castle as a fief from the Brandenburg Margrave Ludwig of Bavaria . In the Landbuch der Mark Brandenburg from 1375 the place is listed as Brist . In 1477 the place is called a village place, so it was desolate .

On September 30, 1928, the manor district of Briest was united with the rural community of Briest.

On July 1, 1950, the municipality of Briest was dissolved by incorporation into the city of Tangerhütte. Since May 31, 2010 the district of Briest has also been part of the newly formed Tangerhütte.

Attractions

The Briest Castle is a mansion made of oak half-timbering, which, according to the building inscription, was built in 1624 in the transitional forms from the late Renaissance to the early Baroque. It is one of the last surviving aristocratic residences of this type in northeast Germany. The Briest chapel was built in 1599 as the first Protestant manor chapel in the Altmark in a half-timbered construction. The chapel was donated by Pantaleon von Bismark, Hypolita von Bismarck and her husband Christoph von Alvensleben. The castle had been in the possession of the von Bismarck family from its construction until 1945 and was repurchased and renovated by them after German reunification .

religion
