history

In 1209 the place was first mentioned in a document as Stenfelde , which identifies it as the property of the diocese of Havelberg . It is assumed that there is a reference to a barrow north of the village. The large stone grave dates from the Middle Neolithic (3500–2800 BC) and with a length of 47 m it has the longest megalithic bed in Saxony-Anhalt.

In the second half of the 12th century, the village church was built from field stones. In 1238 the Counts of Osterburg were named as landlords. In the 15th century the place came under Brandenburg rule and was in the Upper Saxon Empire .

Steinfeld belonged to the Stendal district of the Mark Brandenburg in the Altmark . Between 1807 and 1813 the place was in the Stendal district on the territory of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Westphalia . After Napoleon's expulsion, Prussia incorporated Steinfeld into the district of Stendal in 1816 as part of an administrative reform . In 1873 the Stendal - Uelzen railway line was opened with a train station in Steinfeld. At the beginning of the 20th century the place had 179 inhabitants, the number increased to 190 by 1939.

On July 1, 1950, the neighboring community of Schönfeld was incorporated. For the first time the community is referred to as Steinfeld (Altmark) . After the GDR territorial reform of 1952, Steinfeld was in the newly created Stendal district in the Magdeburg district . In the 1964 census, the population was 430. Steinfeld has been located in the north of the state of Saxony-Anhalt since 1990.

As part of a reorganization of the community in Saxony-Anhalt, Steinfeld, with around 220 inhabitants, joined the newly formed community of Bismark with effect from January 1, 2010. The districts Steinfeld and Schönfeld belong to the newly formed village of Steinfeld in the town of Bismark (Altmark) .
