The Protestant village church Steinfeld is a Romanesque stone church in the Steinfeld district of Bismark (Altmark) in the Stendal district in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the parish of Kläden in the Stendal parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

History and architecture

The Steinfeld village church is a Romanesque hall church from the second half of the 12th century, which is located on a hill on the northern edge of the village and consists of a recessed square choir, the nave and a mighty west transverse tower. The upper part of the tower with arched sound openings and a gable roof is a little younger. The masonry is carefully executed, but has been characterized by multiple modifications. The stepped round arch portal in the west with combat cornice has been preserved in its original form , a similarly designed portal in the south was walled up in 1901. The priest's gate from the 13th century has a semicircular field stone as a lintel and a board door with original fittings, similar to the one in the village church of Groß Möringen . The northern nave windows have also been preserved in their original form. The other large arched openings come from a renovation in 1713. Repairs are from the second half of the 18th century and the years 1901 and 1968.

The interior is flat and shows a triumphal arch with battle cornices. Ornamental ceiling paintings from the beginning of the 18th century have been preserved in the nave, and a painted coffered ceiling from 1901 in the choir . The east window with the depiction of the teaching Christ probably comes from the Ferdinand Müller company in Quedlinburg.

Furnishing

A valuable winged altar with a renewed shrine and canopies contains carved figures from around 1440. The central shrine shows the Mother of God flanked by saints, above John the Baptist and a holy bishop, below Saints Catherine and Magdalena. In the left wing Saints Barbara and Stephanus are depicted above , below Johannes Evangelista and Laurentius , in the right wing above Peter and Helena , below George and Margareta.

The wooden pulpit from around 1610 is decorated with sparse carving and small baluster columns. The late Romanesque baptismal font made of sandstone is designed according to the type of the Lower Rhine-Westphalian baptisms in a round chalice shape with two female and two male heads on the shaft. A bronze bell was cast by Master Bertram in 1454.
