Schönfeld Castle

The Schönfeld Castle is one of the Renaissance and the Baroque modeled on building in Schonfeld , a part of the territory of the district Steinfeld (Altmark) in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt .

Schönfeld, ten kilometers west of the Altmark center of Stendal , had been in the possession of the von Rundstedt family since the end of the 12th century . In 1873 Otto von Rundstedt gave the order to build a representative castle west of the old manor house. The work began with the creation of a pond, the excavation of which served as the basis for the building to be built. Within three years, a broad, two-storey plastered building was built on a high basement base and with a striking mansard hipped roof . The north-facing main font is equipped with a three-axis central projection into which the main portal is embedded. Two wings are attached to the south. While the western wing protrudes only slightly over the southern front, the east wing is uniaxial . A large terrace with balustrades was laid out between the two wings. The coat of arms of the von Rundstedt family is located above the garden portal. The entire south front is decorated with a stucco band above the basement. The interiors are designed with stucco ceilings and some are decorated with wall and ceiling paintings. In 1885 a student of landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné laid out an 87,625 m² castle park in the style of an English landscape park. The Gutsteich and partly the then 700 year old tree population were included.

In 1945, as part of the land reform ordered by the Soviet occupying power, the castle was expropriated and given municipal use. While the von Rundstedt family bought back their agricultural property in 1993, the castle was sold by the state of Saxony-Anhalt in 1996 to an East Frisian family who converted the building into a hotel that was operated until 2007. The plan to use the castle as a senior citizens' residence from 2011 could not be implemented. Instead, the castle was taken over by a brothel operator and converted into a brothel . In 2014 the castle was acquired by a Hamburg entrepreneur couple and made available to the public as a venue for events.
