history

Already at the end of the 12th century the noble von Rundstedt family was resident in Schönfeld. In the middle of the 13th century, the stone church that still exists today in its former form was built. In 1370 the place name was first mentioned in writing as Schonenuelde on the occasion of the foundation of a grain harvest for the church. In 1376 in the land register of Emperor Charles IV it is mentioned that the Stendal citizen Etzel Duser, the von Bismarck family, the Stendal Cathedral and the Stendal Hospital St. Gertrud had property and taxes in the Altmark farming village . From the spelling of the place name, it was concluded that the name indicates a Germanic settlement.

Excavations in 1904 and 1910 brought to light finds from the Neolithic Age, after which a historical period was named as Schönfeld culture .

The place names Schonfelth and Schonevelde are known in documents from 1540 and the name Schönefeldt in 1693 , which was probably derived from Schänfeld , which meant the field of damage or barren field .

There is evidence that a manor was owned by the von Rundstedt family from 1509 (under Hermann von Ronstedt, died 1548) to 1945 . For the year 1641 it is handed down that there were two knight seats in the former Schonefeldt. From 1840 Otto von Rundstedt began to reforest the heath area surrounding the place. To do this, he had to buy up numerous properties from third parties. The von Rundstedtsche Rittergut, located in the western edge of the village, became a legally independent unit in 1872, which in 1910 had 15 residents. 132 people lived in the village of Schönfeld at the same time. In 1873 Otto von Rundstedt gave the order to build a representative castle west of the old manor house . Nine years later, his wife Elisabeth von Rundstedt arranged for a new manor church to be built in the immediate vicinity of the old village church. In 1885, a large park in the English style was laid out at the castle by the horticultural master Hermann Riemann.

On September 30, 1928, the Schönfeld manor district was merged with the Schönfeld rural community. In 1939 the community of Schönfeld had 241 inhabitants. In 1945 the estate was expropriated in the course of the land reform initiated by the Soviet occupying power and the 434 hectare property was sprawled out by giving it to new farmers. While the manor house was being demolished, the manor church was transferred to the Evangelical parish of Schönfeld. On July 1, 1950, Schönfeld was incorporated into the neighboring town of Steinfeld (Altmark).

After German reunification, the landscape architect Hubertus von Rundstedt bought the estate back in 1993 and founded an eco-farm, a forestry company and a planning office for garden and landscape architecture in Schönfeld. Schönfeld Castle was sold to an East Frisian family in 1996 who converted the building into a hotel that existed until 2007. On August 2, 2010, the Friends of the Gutskirche Schönfeld association was founded , which endeavors to preserve the Gutskirche.

Since Steinfeld was incorporated into the town of Bismark (Altmark) on January 1, 2010, the Schönfeld district has been part of the newly formed town of Steinfeld (Altmark) and the town of Bismark (Altmark).
