Until December 31, 2009 Dobberkau was an independent municipality.

The municipality council of the municipality Dobberkau decided on June 23, 2009 to approve an area change agreement, whereby their municipality was dissolved and part of a new unified municipality called the city of Bismark (Altmark) .
