Luise Mewis

Luise Mewis (* 18th July 1864 in Dobberkau ; † 2. March 1947 in the island (Altmark) ) was a Altmärker regional poet.

Mewis founded the “Frauenhilfe” association in September 1914 and the virgin association in Insel in October 1914. As the chairman of these associations, she shaped village life. During the First World War there was intensive support for soldiers. Due to her extensive activities, she was a local poet and patriot known beyond the Altmark. She wrote part of her work in the Altmark Low German dialect.

In her honor, a street named after Luise Mewis was named in the village Insel, which today belongs to the city of Stendal . A memorial plaque reminding of Mewis is located at the village cemetery in the vicinity of the Insel village church .
