The village church island is the Protestant church of the city of Stendal belonging village island in Saxony-Anhalt .

Architecture and history

The Romanesque hall church was built around the year 1172. Immediately after completion of the nave, the church tower was added to the west with a smooth joint. It is covered by a steep gable roof. The bell storey has sound openings designed as pointed arches on its gable ends. The sound openings on the eaves sides are designed as coupled round arches. The basement of the tower originally had a barrel vault . The choir is included in the nave. Carefully hewn field stones were used as building material . The end is an apse with three Romanesque windows. On the north and south sides of the church there are walled arched portals with neatly worked granite walls . In the north wall of the church there are two arched windows in their original state with a clear width of 20 cm. The other windows are significantly larger and designed as a stitch arch . They were created in this form during an extensive redesign of the church in 1745. A half-timbered vestibule is built on the north side of the church . This extension, like a vaulted crypt, was also created during the renovations in 1745.

A restoration took place at the beginning of the 20th century. It is believed that the round-arched west portal was also built during this period.

The interior of the church is spanned by a flat ceiling. The ship and tower are connected by two arched arcades. An altar retable richly decorated with carvings, created by Adamus Wildt in 1745 , is remarkable. Paintings depict the Last Supper, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection of Christ. The pulpit , which is also richly carved and designed in the style of the altar, was also created during this period .

In the church is the epitaph of Marie Sophie Louise von Borstel, who died in 1811, in the form of a stele , with a coat of arms and inscription .

Noteworthy is the brick courtyard portal, which was probably built in the 16th century, with a round arched passage and a segmental arched passage for pedestrians.
