The Uchte is a 49 km long, right or southern tributary of the Biese in the north of Saxony-Anhalt , Germany . The flow ordinal number is 3.

overview

The course of the river, which is located in the south and east of the Altmark , runs entirely in the area of the Stendal district . The slope of the Uchte is a little over 50 m from the source to the mouth. Long sections of the Uchte were canalized as part of the improvement measures .

All waters in the catchment area of the Uchte are developed to regulate water up to the source areas. The waters were "deepened, straightened, fortified, forced into a trapezoidal profile" and are partly completely woodless. Above Stendal, mainly due to a lack of clarified responsibilities, almost all of the approx. 140 dams that are supposed to hold back the water in the melioration channels are open. The floodplain is largely destroyed. Neither the Uchte nor its tributaries are to be assessed as natural or only partially natural.

course

The headwaters in Uchtspringe , which is part of the “Uchte-Tangerquellen” nature reserve, is located on the northern edge of the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide at around 75  m above sea level. NHN . Most of the water comes here from the source area south of Uchtspringe, at the foot of Spring Mountain - hill . The longest source arm (about 1.6 km), however, rises west of Uchtspringe. For the first ten kilometers, the gradient is around 40 m. A watermill on the Uchte has been in operation in the neighboring town of Staats in Uchtspring since 1335 . It is still intact and can be viewed. From here on, the Uchte absorbs large amounts of water through agricultural drainage ditches . From Käthen the Uchten lowland expands. In the east it flows (past Nahrstedt , Möringen and Insel ) into the urban area of Stendal .

Only 10 km from the Elbe , the Uchte turns north from Stendal (where it partly runs underground). Passing Eichstedt , Klein Schwechten and Goldbeck , it reaches the edge of the Wische in Walsleben , a flat area between the Uchte and Elbe. The course of the Uchte (from Stendal to Walsleben parallel to the Elbe) now turns to the northwest. It flows through Düsedau to Osterburg . To the northeast of the city, it flows into the Biese , which flows from Seehausen under the name Aland towards the Elbe.

Tributaries

The tributaries are all ditches.

Name meaning

There are no direct sources as to the meaning of the name of the river.

The surface shapes in the Uchte catchment area were created in the Saale Glaciation . Since in the valleys , below the superficially deposited sand , layers of clay and marl prevent the rain water penetrates into the ground, leads to the formation of waterlogging , to the formation of swamps leads and flat, standing water. Especially above Stendal, the gradient is so small that it is a floodplain. The name may be possible insofar analogous to stains lamp , whose name probably ukt- apa is due (marsh or bog water) possible.
