The murder cross near Staffelde

In front of the southern entrance to the town there used to be a stone that formed the base of a cross. The cross stood on a wooded height about 50 meters west of the road to Tangermünde. Wilhelm Zahn reported in 1899 that the last remnant was removed a decade ago. Beckmann reported in 1753 that two nobles dueled at the site and lost their lives in the process. They should be buried under the cross. According to a more recent story, the duel is said to have taken place between French officers in 1806.
