The Altmärkisches Museum is a local museum in Stendal in Saxony-Anhalt . It is named after the Altmark region, whose history it presents, and is located in the buildings of the former St. Catherine's Monastery .

history

In 1888 members of the Altmärkisches Heimatverein founded the museum. The basis of the collection came from the noble family von Alvensleben , the superintendent Müller, the secret medical councilor Friedrich Haacke and the former literary association in Stendal. Initially, the museum was located in the upper cloister of the Stendal Cathedral and at other locations in Stendal. After the Second World War, Rudolf Langhammer ran the museum. In 1963 the museum moved into the former St. Katharinen monastery on Schadewachten.

In 2008, 6,000 people visited the museum.
