Location in Saxony-Anhalt

Peulingen belongs to the village of Groß Schwechten and is part of the Hanseatic city of Stendal in Saxony-Anhalt .

geography

Peulingen, a short street village with a church, is 3½ kilometers south of Groß Schwechten and 6½ kilometers northwest of Stendal in the Altmark . The moat flows north through the village into the Speckgraben, which flows south of the Krepe into the Uchte .

history

The place was founded by Thuringians around the year 300.

In 1204, a Rodegerus de Pivlinge appeared as a witness in a document issued in Arneburg . In 1212 a Rudingerus de Piulingen was named as a witness.

The village of Peulingen was first mentioned in 1319 as in villa Peweling , when Margrave Waldemar confirmed a donation from the church. In the Landbuch der Mark Brandenburg from 1375 the village is listed as Puwelinghe . Further mentions are 1608 Puwelingk , 1687 Puelingen , 1775 Beulingen or Pugling and finally 1804 Peulingen .

In 1365, the Peulingen pastor Heinrich von Pasewalk founded the small hospital for the Holy Spirit in Stendal. The knightly family von Piewerling (Vivlinge, Piwerlingh) named themselves after the place.

Origin of the place name

The name is of German origin. Friedrich Hoßfeld thinks that the North Swabian ending in the names 1212 piulingen, 1319 peweling, 1377 peuwelingen, 1472 puwelingen does not allow a satisfactory interpretation.

prehistory

Klaus Schwarz reported in 1949: “On the edge of the gravel pit east of Peulingen, five early Iron Age cremation graves with belt hooks, sail earrings, blue glass beads and crockery were found between 1937 and 1946 . The mine operation required an investigation of the edge of the pit in 1947. ”A damaged grave was found that contained fragments of a vase.

Incorporations

On July 25, 1952, the municipality of Peulingen was reclassified from the district of Stendal to the new district of Stendal . On October 1, 1973, the Peulingen community was incorporated into the Groß Schwechten community.

When Groß Schwechten was incorporated into Stendal on January 1, 2010, the district of Peulingen became part of the newly established town of Groß Schwechten and as a district to the Hanseatic city of Stendal.

Culture and sights

  • The Protestant village church of Peulingen, a Romanesque stone building from the 13th century, was expanded in the 18th century by a tower with a Welsche dome with an octagonal lantern . The hood burned down as a result of a lightning strike in 1914 and was rebuilt in the same year. The metal from the old three bells melted in the fire was reused to cast the new bells. The largest bell from 1583 was cast by Hans Olemann in Magdeburg.
  • The local cemetery is in the churchyard.
  • Every year a linden festival takes place in the village.
