Storkau (Elbe) is a district of the city of Tangermünde in the Stendal district in Saxony-Anhalt (Germany).

geography

Storkau is located on the left bank of the Elbe , about 8 km north of Tangermünde .

history

The place was first mentioned in documents in 1209. The Electoral Brandenburg Council Ortel von Zehmen was the owner of the Storkau / Tangermünde estate in 1425. Since 1416 he was clerk of the Marquis , in 1438 Vogt and bailiff and 1441 Hofrichter the Altmark .

The palace, which was built next to the manor in 1912 in the neoclassical style, was used from the late 1930s to train leaders of the Reich Labor Service . After 1945 it was mainly a hospital and nurses' school, for which new buildings were built. Today the four-star Hotel Schloss Storkau , which opened in 1995, is primarily used as a training academy for the Administrative Employers' Liability Insurance Association (VBG).

On September 30, 1928, the rural community of Storkau and the Storkau manor district were merged with the Billberge manor district to form a rural community of Storkau.

Storkau belonged to the administrative association Arneburg-Goldbeck until 2006 and changed to the administrative association Tangermünde on January 12, 2006 . Until December 31, 2009, Storkau was an independent municipality with the associated district of Billberge. On June 9, 2009, the Storkau municipal council decided to incorporate it into Tangermünde on January 1, 2010 by means of a territorial change agreement. The local mayor is Sabine Augustin.

traffic

Regular buses and on-call buses run by Regionalverkehr Westsachsen (RVW) under the brand name stendalbus . The nearest train station is in Hämerten on the Stendal – Rathenow railway line , about three kilometers to the southwest. Storkau is connected to the surrounding towns of Stendal , Tangermünde and Arneburg via country roads . Federal highway 188 runs five kilometers south of Storkau and is roughly parallel to the railway line here.

Storkau is one of the Altmark Hiking Nests , which are organized in the Altmark Hiking Club.
