The Tangerhütte district was part of the Magdeburg district , which was founded on July 25, 1952 . It was dissolved with effect from January 1, 1988 and divided between the Stendal and Wolmirstedt districts.

Motor vehicles (with the exception of motorcycles) and trailers were assigned three-letter distinctive signs starting with the pair of letters HV from around 1974 to the end of 1987 . The last number plate series used for motorcycles was HY 80-01 to HY 99-99 .
