location
The Osterburg district lay in the northern Altmark on the left bank of the Elbe and touched the inner-German border in the northwest . Important waters alongside the Elbe were the Aland , the Biese and the Uchte as well as the Arendsee .
Neighboring areas
The Osterburg district bordered clockwise in the north, starting with the (rural) districts Ludwigslust , Perleberg , Havelberg , Stendal , Gardelegen (until 1987 Kalbe (Milde) ), Salzwedel and Lüchow-Dannenberg (from 1965) and Seehausen (until 1965) .
history
On July 25, 1952, there was an extensive administrative reform in the GDR , during which, among other things, the states of the GDR lost their importance and new districts were established. The then Osterburg district gave municipalities to the Seehausen and Kalbe (Milde) districts . From the remaining district area, together with parts of the Stendal district, the new Osterburg district with its seat in Osterburg was formed. The district was assigned to the newly formed Magdeburg district .
On July 2, 1965, the Seehausen district was dissolved again and incorporated into the Osterburg district. On January 1, 1988, the Osterburg district was expanded to include the municipality of Meßdorf in the dissolved district of Kalbe (Milde).
On May 17, 1990, the district was renamed the Osterburg district. On the occasion of the reunification of the two German states, the district was awarded to the re-established state of Saxony-Anhalt in 1990. During the first district reform in Saxony-Anhalt , which came into force on July 1, 1994, it went into the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel and the Landkreis Stendal.
