history

The place Gladigau appears for the first time in 1238 as Gladegowe in a document. At that time the Romanesque stone church in the village was already around 30 years old. According to records from the middle of the 18th century, Gladigau was once surrounded by a protective hedge of thorns .

In the middle of the 19th century, a calico dye factory was operated in Gladigau, and a few decades later there was a dairy, two mills, a cement factory and a connection to the rail network. A traditional island at the former train station is reminiscent of the long-disused small train.

After the beginning of the 20th century were made amelioration of piping could the agricultural area will be expanded and the risk of flooding decreased significantly in the region. The road bridge over the Biese was built in 1913.

Incorporations

On 25 July 1952, the municipality Gladigau was from the district Osterburg in the district Osterburg reclassified. The community of Schmersau was dissolved on February 1, 1974 and incorporated into the community of Gladigau with its Orpensdorf district . On July 1, 1994, Gladigau finally became part of today's Stendal district.

The municipal councils of the municipalities Ballerstedt (on November 24, 2008), Düsedau (on November 12, 2008), Erxleben (on November 10, 2008), Flessau (on November 27, 2008), Gladigau (on November 26, 2008), Königsmark (on November 25, 2008), Krevese (on November 12, 2008), Meseberg (on November 19, 2008), Rossau (on November 10, 2008), Walsleben (on November 10, 2008) and the Hanseatic City Osterburg (Altmark) (on November 6, 2008) decided that their communities should be dissolved and united into a new unified community called the Hanseatic City of Osterburg (Altmark) . This contract was approved by the county as the lower local supervisory authority and came into effect on July 1, 2009.

After the implementation of the territorial change agreement of the previously independent municipality of Gladigau, Gladigau, Orpensdorf and Schmersau will become districts of the new Hanseatic city of Osterburg (Altmark). For the included municipality, the local constitution according to §§ 86 ff. Of the municipality code of Saxony-Anhalt is introduced. The incorporated municipality of Gladigau and the future districts of Gladigau, Orpensdorf and Schmersau will become part of the new Hanseatic city of Osterburg (Altmark). A local council with four members including the local mayor is formed in the incorporated municipality and now the village of Gladigau.

Gladigau Castle and Battle of Gladigau

Model of Gladigau Castle

At the end of the 19th century, the remains of a rampart and ditch were still recognizable, which enclosed a square, in the middle of which was the ruins of a square stone tower, popularly known as "the Klus" at the beginning of the 19th century. Wilhelm Zahn wrote in 1901: “Only 0.25 km south [of Gladigau], on the right bank of the Biese, already part of the field mark of the 1.5 km southeast of the village of Schmersau,“ the old castle site ”lies on a meadow terrain, the eastern one Continuation is called Reuterbucht. “That is today shortly before the southern entrance to the village. Paul Grimm announced in 1958 that no safe traces of the castle's terrain had been preserved.

What Christoph Entzelt wrote in 1579 is quite adventurous . The Roman Drusus is said to have conquered the area and installed a Roman prince Clodius as margrave in 11 years before the birth of Christ. He continues to write "Castellum Clodij ... since he has his seat, is Gladigaw, of which the holtz is called Cley".

The Bretscher pastor August Hofmeister said in 1884 that Gladigau Castle could have been a border castle as early as the time of Otto I. From this it could be deduced that the wooden castle was destroyed during the Slavic uprising of 983 and was later rebuilt as a stone castle. The bishops of Magdeburg and Halberstadt invaded the Altmark in 1240. In the course of the Magdeburg War , they were defeated by the Margrave Johann von Brandenburg in the Battle of the Biese , as some chroniclers have learned from the Chronicon Marchiae Brandenburgensis (created around 1280). In Pulkawa's Bohemian Chronicle it says "anno videlicet MCCXL ... qui Bisa ...". Andreas Angelus describes the place as “a mile walk over Osterburg an der Bysa”. Christoph Entzelt writes: "bey dem schlos und dorff Gladigow uber osterburgk". The stone castle is said to have been destroyed during this battle near Gladigau. Beckmann reported in 1753 about the "legacy of a castle, so it consists of dilapidated masonry ... which the Klus tends to be called".

Beckmann reported on the award of a customs duty on the Biese to a certain Bethmann in 1287 as "in Gladigow, in Rossow, Schlikstorpe, in antiqua civitate, ... per aquam Bysen". In the 19th century, some authors discussed whether Gladigau Castle would have been “antiqua civitate” or a town no longer known by name, such as Bambissen.

For the 777th anniversary of the village in 2015, a fairytale castle was set up. In 2016, a stylized castle made of massive beams was erected as the new landmark of the village, financed by sponsors from the economy and money that was collected during the anniversary celebrations.
