Dieter Scheitler

Dieter Scheitler (born October 18, 1943 in Jena ) is a former soccer player. He played in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of the GDR Football Association , for SC Motor / FC Carl Zeiss Jena , with whom he was twice champion and once cup winner.

Athletic career

Scheitler began his football career in 1957 with the youth team of SC Motor Jena. At the age of 19, after completing an apprenticeship as a milling cutter, he undertook three years of military service and during this time continued to play football for the second-class army sports association Vorwärts Rostock .

After his discharge from military service, Scheitler returned to Jena in the fall of 1966 and joined FC Carl Zeiss Jena, which has since been spun off from SC Motor. There he was immediately accepted into the league team and played on November 16, 1966 in the league game 1. FC Lok Leipzig - FC Carl Zeiss (3: 1) as a center forward, his first league game. In this season 1966/67 the 1.79 m tall Scheitler was used a total of six times and played mainly a left winger. Already in the next season 1967/68 he had developed into a regular player. He played all the point games, was used variably as a center forward and on the left attacking side and was the most successful goalscorer of his team with eleven goals. He had a decisive share in winning the championship of FC Carl Zeiss.

On September 23, 1967 Scheitler came to his only GDR selection game. With the youth national team , he played the international GDR - Hungary (1-1) as a left winger.

After a small trough in 1968/69 with only 18 league point games and only two goals, Scheitler triumphed again successfully in the 1969/70 season. Again he played all 26 point games, this time with nine goals together with Helmut Stein he was again the best shooter in Jena and won his second championship title. Until 1973 Scheitler was part of the regular squad of Jena and added another title to his career when he won the cup in 1972. Scheitler played his last league season in 1973/74. Between the 4th and 22nd matchday he was used in nine point games, of which he played only two over the full distance. His last league appearance was the game FC Carl Zeiss - 1. FC Lok Leipzig (2: 2). For 55 minutes he worked as a center forward. For two more years he helped out in the second team of FC Carl Zeiss, and in 1977 he finally ended his career as a football player.

Scheitler played 219 competitive games for FC Carl Zeiss Jena, in which he scored 68 goals. These included 156 games (46 goals) in the league, 27 national cup games (11 goals) and 36 international cup games (18) goals.

Further career

In 1986 Dieter Scheitler trained the GDR U-15 national team with Eberhard Köditz . The footballers he supervised in this selection included the future professionals Tom Persich and Angelo Vier . In 1988 he and Frank Engel led the GDR's U-16 national team to the bronze medal at the U-16 European Football Championship in 1988 .

Even after his playing days, Scheitler remained associated with FC Carl Zeiss Jena as a club member. He became chairman of the Jena Fan Project Association and was awarded the FC Carl Zeiss Golden Badge of Honor in 1996.
