Wahrenberg is a district of the municipality of Aland in the Stendal district in Saxony-Anhalt .

geography

The cluster village is located in the Altmark region , directly on the Elbe in the far north of the Stendal district and the state of Saxony-Anhalt. On the opposite, north-eastern side of the Elbe, the Brandenburg town of Wittenberge is about six kilometers away . The Aland , a tributary of the Elbe, flows past three kilometers to the southwest .

history

Wahrenberg is one of the oldest settlements in the Altmark. Fragments found suggest a likely Old Slavic settlement from the 9th or 10th century.

In the Landbuch der Mark Brandenburg of 1375 the village is listed as preter villam Wartenberg , Wittenberge Castle had income here. The historian Peter P. Rohrlach explains: "The document can be clearly assigned to Wahrenberg, as it is named in direct connection with Wittenberge, which was already in the possession of the Gans Edlen Herren zu Putlitz, the later owners of the place discussed here". Further mentions are 1498 to Wardenberge , 1516 to Warenberghe , 1541 Warttenbergk and finally Wahrenberg in 1804 .

To protect themselves from the floods of the Elbe, many farms were laid out on artificially created hills ( terps ). Albrecht 'Der Bär' settled Dutch and Frisian dyke builders in the 12th century to dike the area. In 1753 the village still belonged to the Barons of Putlitz, whose castle, the Ganseburg , was not far away on the Aland.

In 1818 there was a ship mill in the Elbe.

Origin of the place name

The name comes from the Elbe floods, from which one had to “protect” and “rescue” oneself.

Elbe ferry

Since 1865 the Schulze / Fredrich ferry family has been running the Elbe ferry between Wahrenberg and Wittenberge. With the nationalization in 1960 it went to the municipality. In 1978 the ferry traffic fell sharply due to the new Elbe bridge in Wittenberge . After the last ferry master, Fuhrmann, retired in 1985, ferry operations came to a standstill.

Incorporations

The municipality Wahrenberg was on 25 July 1952 from the district Osterburg in the district Seehausen reclassified. On December 21, 1973, the community came to the Osterburg district. On July 1, 1994 she was assigned to the district of Stendal.

On September 1, 2010, Wahrenberg was incorporated into Aland. Before that, the place was co-administered by the Seehausen (Altmark) community , but did not belong to it.
