geography

Wendemark, a marshland village , is located in the north of the Altmark in the Wische on the river Tauber Aland near the Elbe . The small town of Werben (Elbe) is only four kilometers away. The Romanesque Road leads through Wendemark .

Subdivision breakdown

The village of Wendemark and 10 residential spaces (smaller settlements) are part of the Wendemark district:

In 1928 the Barfeldshof farm was also listed in the Wendemark municipality, the location of which has not yet been determined.

history

In 1309 a Conradus dictus de Wentmarke is listed as a witness in a document.

The first mention of the village Wendemark comes from the year 1322 as in uilla wentmarc . Heinrich von Wendemark sold a grain collection from Lichterfelde. In the same year the pastor Heinrich was mentioned as Dominus Hinricus, plebanus in wentmarke .

Further mentions are 1329 in villa, que dicitur Wendemark , 1542 Wendemarck and 1687 Wendemarck . In 1804 the village and estate Wendemark are named with a windmill and a pitcher, which consist of 4 parts. Upper and lower Wendemark belonged to the Seehausen district , Paris and Vorwerk-Wendemark to the Arneburg district .

Origin of the place name

The two stems of the word are probably of Middle High German origin: "wend" for border or a personal name such as Winid or Windo as well as "mark" as border or border region.

Incorporations

On 25 July 1952, the community was Wendemark from the district Osterburg in the district Seehausen reclassified. On July 2, 1965, she was assigned to the Osterburg district . On February 1, 1974, the municipality of Wendemark was incorporated into the city of Werben. On May 1, 1984 it was spun off from Werben, Wendemark was again a municipality.

Until December 31, 2009, Wendemark was an independent municipality with the residential areas Burchardshof, Delkerhof, Elendshof, Engelshof, Parishof, Roggehof, Wiesenhof and Wolmirstift and belonged to the now dissolved Seehausen (Altmark) administrative community .

The municipal councils of the municipalities of Falkenberg (on January 19, 2009), Lichterfelde (on January 19, 2009), Neukirchen (Altmark) (on January 9, 2009) and Wendemark (on January 16, 2009) decided that their Municipalities dissolved and united into a new municipality with the name Altmärkische Wische . This contract was approved by the county as the lower local supervisory authority and came into effect on January 1, 2010.

coat of arms

Blazon : "In red, an oblique silver wave beams, according to the figure accompanied by the top three fan-like questions golden oak leaves with an acorn and below the top of a golden bishop rod with expiring in an acorn and burgeoning small oak leaves decorated crookedness ."

The municipality decided to express the special situation of the place on the border river between the two dioceses of Verden and Halberstadt in the coat of arms. The silver wave bar symbolizes the Aland , the crosier the diocese border and the oak leaves refer to the natural environment of the community. The so-called crook of the bishop's staff, which is decorated in various ways in practice, was equipped with oak leaves in the Wendemark coat of arms in order to create a graphic relationship with the oak leaves above.

The coat of arms was designed by the Magdeburg local heraldist Jörg Mantzsch and approved by the district on March 4, 2009.

The colors of Wendemarks are derived from the tinctures of the symbolism = gold (yellow) and the shield = red.

flag

The flag is striped red - yellow - red (1: 4: 1) (landscape format: stripes running horizontally, lengthwise format: stripes running vertically) and centered with the municipal coat of arms.

Culture and sights

  • The Protestant village church Wendemark was originally an early Gothic brick building that was destroyed in the Thirty Years War. The church was rebuilt in 1663 and expanded in 1719. The former massive brick tower forms the foundation for the half-timbered tower built in 1738.
  • The old cemetery is in the churchyard.
  • In 1958 a new cemetery with a mortuary was created on the southern exit of Parishof.
  • In Wendemark there is a memorial for those who died in the First World War (a square stele) and a memorial stone.

Economy and Infrastructure

Transport links

In Wendemark, the road connection from Werben (Elbe) branches off into a south and a north crossing of the Wische to Seehausen (Altmark) .

Personalities

  • Karl Ludwig Kannegießer (1781–1861), German high school teacher, writer and translator, born in Wendemark
  • Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg (1718–1795), German music theorist, critic and historian of the Enlightenment, born in Wendemark (Altmark)

Trivia

In 1994, Hanns HF Schmidt told the saga The Wonder Book : A gentleman in Wendemark owned a number of books. He had had a valuable book attached to a lectern. A young man in his service was reading the book in his absence when toads, snakes, newts, martens with fish scales and other animals suddenly came into the room. A black knight in a closet advised him to read the text backwards. He did and with it the animals disappeared again. In 1908 Lühe transmitted the legend as Das Bannbuch zu Wedemark . Here, however, the book owner dissolves the magic by reading the text again backwards.
