geography

The district was on the inner-German border in the northern Harz foreland. In the north the circle was bounded by the Great Break . The Huy ridge ran through the center of the circle . The district bordered clockwise to the north, beginning with the (rural) districts of Wolfenbüttel , Helmstedt , Oschersleben , Aschersleben , Quedlinburg , Wernigerode , Goslar , Wolfenbüttel and Helmstedt .

history

On July 25, 1952, there was an extensive administrative reform in the GDR , during which, among other things, the states of the GDR lost their importance and new districts were established. The new Halberstadt district was formed from the previously independent city of Halberstadt and parts of the districts of Oschersleben and Wernigerode . The district was assigned to the newly formed Magdeburg district .

On May 17, 1990, the district was renamed the Halberstadt district. On the occasion of the reunification of the two German states, the district was awarded to the re-established state of Saxony-Anhalt in 1990. During the district reform , which came into force on July 1, 2007, it went into what is now the Harz district.
