Schwanebeck is a small town that belongs to the Vorharz association in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt .
Geographical location
The place is in the northern Harz foreland, northeast of the district town of Halberstadt . The federal highway 245 leads through the village from Halberstadt to Hamersleben . Schwanebeck is located on the Jerxheim – Nienhagen railway line, which was closed in 2001 .
history
The first settlement of the surrounding area took place around 200–400. The first written mention is to the year 1062. In 1270 Schwanebeck was granted city rights for the first time. Schwanebeck belonged to the Diocese of Halberstadt until 1648 and then came to the Principality of Halberstadt. The place was directly under the authority of Gröningen and in 1815 came to the administrative district of Magdeburg of the Prussian province of Saxony .
On January 1, 2010, the municipality of Nienhagen became a district of Schwanebeck.

In the local elections on May 26, 2019 , the 14 seats in the city council were allocated to the following parties and groups of voters . The turnout in 2019 was 52.03%.

In 2001 Hans-Richard Wegner (CDU) was elected mayor. In 2008 Christina Brehmer (Die Linke) became the new mayor. Benno Liebner (CDU) prevailed against incumbent Brehmer in March 2015 with a turnout of 46.3% and 66.7% of the votes.

Religions
The Protestant churches Saint Peter from the 17th century on the market and St. Johannis at the Johannisstraße belong to the parish Schwanebeck and thus to the parish of Halberstadt .
The Catholic Church of the Sacrament of the Holy Sacrament , south of Kapellenstrasse, has existed since 1334 and serves as a parish and pilgrimage church. It belongs to the parish of St. Benedict with its seat on the Huysburg . A little south of the church is the pilgrimage linden tree, a several centuries old linden tree.
The New Apostolic Church in Kapellenstrasse 39 was built from 1983 to 1987 and consecrated in 1987. The layout of the church is the capital letter Omega (Ω) is, in Christianity a symbol of Jesus Christ . The last church service took place in December 2007 and the building was sold. The nearest New Apostolic churches are now 11 km away in Halberstadt and Oschersleben .

Personalities
The theologian and local researcher Stephan Kunze (1772-1851), the agricultural chemist Otto Nolte (1887-1934), the sinologist Helmut Peters (* 1930) and the GDR soccer player Detlef Enge (* 1952) were born in Schwanebeck .
The pedagogue and theologian Heinrich Friedrich Franz Sickel (1794–1842) was the rector of Schwanebeck from 1817 to the 1820s. Friedrich Maurach (1811–1873) served from Schwanebeck as provisional district administrator for the district of Oschersleben from 1848 to 1850 . The Protestant theologian Julius Richter (1862-1940) was a pastor in Schwanebeck from 1896 to 1912. Gerhard Dittmar (1900–1972), teacher and painter, worked as a teacher in Schwanebeck from 1946 to 1950.
