religion

Catholic St. Gertrud Church

The Cistercian monastery of St. Maria and Gertrud was built in 1253, and nuns from the Helfta monastery were added in 1262 . The older Marienkirche was used as a simultaneous church after the Reformation . In 1713 a Protestant parish church was built on the site of the monastery, while the Catholic community inaugurated a new baroque church in 1717 . The Romanesque church tower of the previous church, which has been preserved to this day, was integrated into the new Catholic church. In 1810 the monastery was closed by the Westphalian government after the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss . Ultimately, a Catholic parish could be rebuilt in 1841, and in 1845 the reconstruction of the now partially disused and dilapidated church began. It was inaugurated in 1846 and still exists today as St. Gertrud's Church. In 2003 a memorial stone was erected to mark the 750th anniversary of the founding of the monastery. In 2005 a comprehensive renovation of the St. Gertrud Church was completed.

Today (2016) the Catholic parish of St. Gertrud, which has around 200 members, today belongs to the parish of St. Mathilde , based in Quedlinburg, with the parish Herz-Jesu in Thale and the parish of St. Mathilde in Quedlinburg.

The community is predominantly Protestant. Today the Protestant church belongs to the parish of Bode-Selke-Aue with its seat in Hausneindorf and to the parish of Halberstadt.

Buildings

The former monastery of St. Gertrudis was secularized and acquired in 1811 by the chief bailiff and manor owner Johann Matthias Heyne and remained in the hands of his descendants, who were also the founders of the Heyne, Heyer & Co. company and who were last until expropriation in 1945 as part of the land reform , in addition to the Hedersleben sugar factory, which is still partially built, cultivated 4500 hectares of arable land. The Heyne / Heine family were descendants of the first bailiff at Schneidlingen Castle , Michel Heyne, who had previously worked at the Gröninger court of Duke Heinrich Julius von Braunschweig- Wolfenbüttel. Branches of the family also acquired property in Gröningen , the Vorwerk Heynburg with Dalldorf and Günthersdorf, as well as Hakeborn and the St. Burchardi monastery (Halberstadt) , and the Hadmersleben monastery. Lieutenant General Hans-Walter Heyne came from the Hedersleben branch .

In the course of the land reform, the property of the Hedersleben monastery - arable land and the monastery building complex - was transferred to public ownership. The main building of the monastery housed a ten-class school from 1950 until the new Sigmund-Jähn School was built in 1977. Ancillary buildings of the monastery complex were in use by the LPG , which, in addition to keeping livestock, operated storage rooms and a repair center for agricultural machinery. The community also maintained four communal apartments here.

At the time of German reunification , the buildings of the monastery complex were in a badly neglected condition and increasing decay had begun. In the interest of maintaining and using the monastery complex, the International Center for Innovation, Qualification and Business Promotion eV was founded, which, after transfer to communal ownership by the Treuhandanstalt, concluded a 30-year lease agreement with the community. As a result, the monastery was restored to a usable state by the association. The main building was converted into a seminar and event center. A museum area was set up in the outbuildings. The historic orchard meadow - including the pond - has been renatured and a nature trail created. A biological plant-based sewage treatment plant for wastewater treatment was built, as well as cisterns for collecting rainwater. For these activities, the association was awarded in 1998 by the German Federal Environment Foundation in the context of the “Tat-Orte” competition. In 2014 the municipality of Hedersleben sold the monastery to Heyne's descendants together with partners.

To the east of the monastery is the Protestant St. Trinity Church , built in 1713/14 , to the north of it the Hedersleben monastery forge .

Monuments

In the local cemetery there are gravesites for seven unknown concentration camp prisoners who were murdered and buried in April 1945 on a death march from the Langenstein-Zwieberge concentration camp , a satellite camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp .
