Selke
The Selke is an approximately 64.4 km long, southeast and right tributary of the Bode in the Harz low mountain range and in the northeast Harz foreland in the Harz district and in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt . A good half of its course is in the wooded area of the Lower Harz , the rest from around Meisdorf in the agricultural Harz foreland.

The Selke rises in the Harz district in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt nature reserve in the spring meadows on the Stieger Höhe near Stiege in the " Upper Selketal " nature reserve . Its source is about 510 to 520 m above sea level. NN at the Selketalbahn . About a river kilometer below it flows at 483.1 m above sea level. NN a brook.
For the time being by the nature reserve "Upper Selketal" and up to Guentersberge along the national highway 242 and also at 17 km in length and along the Selketalbahn extending Selke flows at the beginning in the southeastern direction. She passes the Albrechtshaus nature reserve to the west . The Steigerbach coming from the Schalliete joins below it .
After passing Friedrichshöhe , a district of Güntersberge , to the north , the Selke runs eastwards to Güntersberge, where it takes in the Katzsohlbach , which ultimately comes from the south, in the mountain lake ( Mühlteich ) on the western edge of the village . The Limbach , which flows from the northwest, joins the village . Below where the Selke runs south-east again after leaving the B 242, the Steinfurtbach flows in from the north .
A little later the Selke runs through Straßberg , where the Rödelbach joins from the southwest , and further northeast through Silberhütte , where the Uhlenbach flows from the northwest and the Teufelsgrundbach from the southeast . A little further to the northeast, the Selke runs - after crossing under the B 242, which only crosses there - a section along the federal highway 185 . After flowing through Alexisbad and taking in the Friedenstalbach flowing from the northwest at the Klostermühle , it leaves the Güntersberg plateau in the Lower Harz and its valley forms the Selketal natural area as part of the eastern Harz roofing . It takes on the Krebsbach , which also comes from the northwest . Then it runs through Mägdesprung , where the Selketalbahn and the B 185 leave the river that bends east there.
From then on, the Selketal forms a section of the city boundary between Harzgerode , in whose area the river had previously flowed almost exclusively, and Ballenstedt in the north. The Schiebecksbach is taken up from the south and the place of the former Anhalt Castle above the Selkemühle is passed from the north.
When the district of Falkenstein is reached, the "Upper Selketal" nature reserve is replaced by the " Selketal " nature reserve . In it she passes Falkenstein Castle and the Alter Falkenstein and Ackeburg castle stables .
At Meisdorf , located on the northeastern edge of the Harz Mountains, where it has created its narrow, deeply incised or sweeping valley depending on the rock substrate, it leaves the wooded area of the mountains and at the same time the "Selketal" nature reserve and enters the Harz foreland.
Harz foreland
In the north-eastern Harz foreland , the Selke runs through predominantly agricultural areas. Then it flows under the former Frose – Quedlinburg railway line twice and then again crossed under the B 185 in between, it flows through Ermsleben . From then on it runs northwards, again crossing under the railway line, to Reinstedt .
Thereafter, the Selke in the Salzlandkreis flows northwest to and through Hoym . It crosses under the federal highway 6 and runs through Gatersleben . Then, again in the Harz district, it crosses the Halle – Halberstadt railway line and touches Hausneindorf .
Immediately after Tangieren von Hedersleben the border ditch flows from the south , after which the Selke at 98.7 m above sea level. NN in the Saale influx Bode flows .
Flood
In the past, the Selke overflowed its banks several times with considerable damage, which led the state government to plan the expansion of existing and the creation of new flood retention basins . A 12 to 18 m high dam structure planned for the medium term in the Selketal near Meisdorf is particularly controversial . The citizens' initiative Save the Selketal in the Eastern Harz! defends itself against this intention because it fears the destruction of a particularly scenic and important section of the Selketal for nature conservation. In addition, there is resistance to the plans from citizens of the villages on the upper reaches of the Selke, who do not feel adequately protected by a retention basin in the middle reaches. Another retention basin is being planned above Straßberg for this purpose . However, considerable amounts of water come from rivers flowing below Straßberg, especially from the Uhlenbach .
Tributaries
The Selke has more than 50 direct tributaries, some of which are fed by other streams.
