The Alter Falkenstein Castle , also called Alt-Falkenstein Castle , in the Harz Mountains is a stables of a high medieval hilltop castle in the urban area of Falkenstein / Harz in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt . It was built in the 11th century and destroyed in 1115.

Geographical location

The Burgstall Alter Falkenstein is located in the eastern Harz part of Mansfelder Land between Mägdesprung (northern district of Harzgerode) and Meisdorf (southwestern district of Falkenstein / Harz ) on a rocky ridge ( 335.6  m above sea  level ) above the Selke valley . In the wooded landscape of the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt nature park, it is located in the Selketal nature reserve about 1.25 kilometers northwest of the Köhler hut  , located northwest of Pansfelde near the 1344 district road . The Neuer Falkenstein Castle is about 1.8 kilometers east-northeast .

history

The castle was probably built under the rule of the German Emperor Heinrich IV . The architect was the Swabian clergyman and later Bishop Benno II of Osnabrück. After the battle of Welfesholz on February 11, 1115, the castle was razed under the leadership of the Saxon Duke Lothar von Süpplingenburg and was not rebuilt afterwards. The neighboring Neuer Falkenstein Castle was then built , and Alter Falkenstein Castle was probably no longer inhabited since the beginning of the 12th century, as evidence of broken fragments suggests.

description

The castle complex consisted of an oval main castle measuring about 25 x 65 meters and a narrow outer bailey about 85 meters long ; the entire system was about 200 meters long. Nowadays, parts of the moat and rampart as well as remnants of the northern curtain wall can still be seen at the castle stables .

From the rocky ridge of the former castle there is a view of the Selke Valley. A cross commemorates the local researcher and monument curator Hans Reißmann, who died here on July 11, 2003 .
