The Selketal is a nature reserve of around 660  hectares near the town of Falkenstein / Harz in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

General

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0073 is around 660  hectares . It is part of the FFH area “Selketal und Bergwiesen bei Stiege” and the EU bird sanctuary “Northeast Lower Harz”. The nature reserve is almost completely from the conservation area surrounded "resin and flood plains". In the southwest it borders on the nature reserve " Upper Selketal ". A total of 169.19 hectares of the forests in the nature reserve are designated as a total reserve. The area has been under protection since 1994 (date of regulation: February 21, 1994). It replaces the 77.5 hectare “Selketal” nature reserve, which was designated in 1961 and consists of two parts, which placed the area around Alter Falkenstein Castle and the southern slopes of the mountains opposite Ackeburg and Wilhelmsberg under protection. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Harz district.

The nature reserve is located in the town of Falkenberg / Harz in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park . It extends south of Ballenstedt along the deeply cut Selketal between Meisdorf and the municipal boundary to Quedlinburg or Harzgerode and includes the Selke with its valley area, in which the river has a largely free and unobstructed course, areas of the streams flowing to it as well as slope areas of the Selketal lining mountains.

The valley area is characterized by grassland and alder-ash forests as well as moist herbaceous vegetation , vineyards, reed beds and willow bushes that accompany the stream. Depending on their orientation, the slope areas are occupied by different vegetation complexes. The slopes to the north of the Selke, exposed in southerly directions, are covered by rock corridors, crevices, dry and semi-arid lawns with feather grass and rock bushes with common coton , followed by oak forests with pechnelks . In the area of ​​the central Selketal - between the 4th hammer and the foot of the Falkenstein - very extensive stocks of autumn crops grow on the meadows there . Their flowers adorn the damp meadows in September / October.

Wildlife

The Selke is the habitat of bullhead , brook lamprey and loach . In Selketal different come dragonflies as golden-ringed dragonfly and Beautiful Demoiselle , mayflies , stone and caddis flies and amphibians such as salamanders , Alpine Newt , Newt , midwife toad , common toad and frog before. The nature reserve is a habitat for bats such as the noctule bat , Bechstein's bat , lesser horseshoe bat and brown long-eared bat, and various birds such as black stork , middle woodpecker , dipper and kingfisher . In the area of ​​the nature reserve there is the largest known tree-breeding swift population in Germany. After all, the wildcat , dormouse and harvest vole are native here.
